Nintendo packed its September 9 Direct with new games, major updates, surprise returns, and plenty of reasons for Nintendo Switch 2 owners to pay attention.
The biggest reveals included a brand-new 2D Metroid adventure, Kirby’s next 3D game, Persona 6, Monster Hunter Wilds, Final Fantasy VII Revelation, and several upgraded Nintendo Switch 2 editions.
Here are some of the biggest announcements from the show.
Metroid Ravenous Brings Samus Back to 2D
One of the biggest surprises was Metroid Ravenous, a new 2D action adventure starring Samus Aran.
The game builds on the side-scrolling style fans know from the Metroid series while taking advantage of Nintendo Switch 2 hardware.
Nintendo says Metroid Ravenous will launch exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2 on January 28, 2027.
After the success of Metroid Dread and the return of Metroid Prime, Nintendo clearly isn’t slowing down with the franchise.
Kirby and the World Beyond Revealed
Kirby is also getting another major adventure.
Kirby and the World Beyond takes the pink hero into large 3D environments in a new Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive.
Nintendo didn’t simply show a small update or expansion. This is a new Kirby game and one of the more significant first-party announcements from the Direct.
Persona 6 Is Coming to Nintendo Switch 2
Persona fans received one of the biggest third-party announcements of the presentation.
Persona 6 was shown during the Direct alongside Persona 4 Revival.
Getting a major Persona release onto Nintendo Switch 2 adds another significant RPG to the console’s growing third-party lineup.
Monster Hunter Wilds Heads to Switch 2
Capcom is bringing Monster Hunter Wilds to Nintendo Switch 2.
That’s another important third-party addition for Nintendo, especially as the company continues trying to make Switch 2 a home for games that previously demanded more powerful hardware.
Final Fantasy VII Revelation Announced
Square Enix also appeared with Final Fantasy VII Revelation.
The game continues the Final Fantasy VII remake storyline and was one of several major RPG announcements shown during the presentation.
Its appearance alongside Persona 6 gives RPG fans plenty to watch as the Switch 2 library expands.
Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis Revealed
Lara Croft is returning in Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis.
The game is a modern reimagining of Lara’s original 1996 adventure, bringing one of gaming’s most recognizable characters back to where her story began.
For longtime Tomb Raider fans, this could be one of the more interesting surprises from the Direct.
Resident Evil Is Expanding on Switch 2
Capcom wasn’t finished.
Resident Evil 2 Deluxe Edition, Resident Evil 3, and Resident Evil 4 Gold Edition are also heading to Nintendo’s platform.
Bringing more modern Resident Evil games to Switch 2 helps strengthen the console’s horror lineup while giving Nintendo players more options from Capcom’s biggest franchises.
Pikmin 4 Gets a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition
Pikmin 4 is getting upgraded for Nintendo’s newer hardware with Pikmin 4 – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Dandori Academy.
The new edition includes additional features while bringing the existing adventure over to Switch 2.
Nintendo also announced Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity – Definitive Edition as another returning title receiving new attention on the system.
Mario Kart World Is Getting New Content
Nintendo isn’t forgetting about games already available.
Mario Kart World received new content during the presentation, giving existing players another reason to return.
Nintendo also showed updates for Pokémon Pokopia, Star Fox, Nintendo Switch Sports Resort, Xenoblade Chronicles 3 – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition and other titles.
Star Fox Adventures Joins Nintendo Classics
Nintendo also had something for retro fans.
Star Fox Adventures is joining the Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics library for Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members.
The GameCube title originally launched in 2002 and stands apart from traditional Star Fox games with its heavier focus on exploration and adventure.
Nintendo Switch 2’s Library Keeps Growing
The September Nintendo Direct wasn’t built around just one huge reveal.
Instead, Nintendo showed the depth of the Switch 2 lineup.
Metroid Ravenous and Kirby and the World Beyond strengthen Nintendo’s first-party offerings, while Persona 6, Monster Hunter Wilds, Final Fantasy VII Revelation, Tomb Raider and Resident Evil add considerable third-party support.
With more Nintendo games, major publishers and upgraded classics joining the platform, Switch 2’s upcoming library is getting increasingly difficult to ignore.
