Updated September 2026
Gaming is bigger than ever in 2026, but answering one simple question has become surprisingly difficult: which gaming platform actually has the most players?
PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo all have enormous audiences. However, comparing them isn’t as simple as putting four numbers beside each other.
That’s because companies measure their audiences differently. Sony reports PlayStation monthly active users. Microsoft now operates Xbox across console, PC, mobile and cloud. Nintendo primarily reports hardware and software sales. Steam provides live concurrent-player statistics.
Instead of treating those different measurements as if they’re identical, let’s look at the latest available numbers and see what they actually tell us.
PlayStation: More Than 125 Million Active Users
PlayStation remains one of the world’s largest dedicated gaming ecosystems.
Sony reported 125 million PlayStation monthly active users for the first quarter of its 2026 fiscal year.
That makes PlayStation particularly impressive because we’re looking at active accounts rather than lifetime console sales.
Xbox: Microsoft’s Gaming Audience Has Expanded Far Beyond Xbox Consoles
Xbox is much harder to compare directly with PlayStation than it used to be.
Microsoft says its gaming business now reaches more than 500 million monthly active users. However, that number should not be described as 500 million Xbox console players.
Microsoft’s gaming ecosystem now extends across Xbox consoles, Windows PC, mobile, cloud gaming and games available on competing platforms.
That’s an important distinction.
Xbox in 2026 is increasingly an ecosystem rather than simply a console.
Nintendo: Switch 2 Is Growing Fast
Nintendo is also difficult to compare using monthly active users because the company primarily publishes hardware and software sales figures.
As of June 30, 2026, Nintendo reported:
Nintendo Switch: 156.59 million hardware units sold
Nintendo Switch 2: 23.68 million hardware units sold
Switch 2 has therefore built a substantial install base relatively quickly, while the original Switch remains one of the best-selling gaming systems ever.
However, consoles sold should not be confused with monthly active players.
PC and Steam: Gaming’s Massive Open Platform
PC is even harder to measure because there is no single company controlling the entire PC gaming market.
Steam alone recently reached approximately 41.6 million concurrent users at its 48-hour peak.
And Steam represents only part of PC gaming.
PC players also use Epic Games Store, Battle.net, Xbox on PC, Riot’s ecosystem and many other launchers and services.
This is why estimates for the total worldwide PC gaming audience can be dramatically larger than Steam’s numbers.
So Which Platform Actually Has the Most Players?
If we’re talking about gaming platforms broadly, PC likely has the largest overall global audience.
But there isn’t a trustworthy single number that allows us to directly compare every PC gamer with PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo.
Among the numbers companies publicly report, PlayStation provides one of the clearest measurements with 125 million monthly active users.
Microsoft reports a much larger gaming reach of more than 500 million monthly active users, but that audience extends well beyond Xbox consoles.
Nintendo has an enormous hardware install base, while Steam demonstrates the incredible scale of PC gaming with tens of millions of people online simultaneously.
So the real 2026 answer isn’t as simple as declaring one winner.
The gaming industry has moved beyond the traditional console war. Players increasingly move between consoles, PCs, handhelds, mobile devices and cloud gaming.
